چکیده

OBJECTIVE To examine blood pressure (BP) in sedentary African American women during two exercise intensities on a cycle and treadmill at fixed heart rate (HR) values. METHODS Blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) were assessed in 44 women (age 33.1 +/- 8.2 years) during cycling and treadmill walking at 40% and 60% heart rate reserve (HRR). Systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) reactivity differences were evaluated with separate 2 (mode: cycle, treadmill) x 2 (intensity: 40%, 60% HRR) repeated measures analyses of covariance. Separate multiple regression analyses for the cycle and treadmill were performed to examine potential contributors to higher SBP reactivity at 60% HRR. RESULTS After adjusting for baseline SBP, body mass index (BMI), and age, mean SBP reactivity was higher during cycling compared to treadmill at both levels of intensity (P < or = .05). The DBP reactivity revealed a main effect for mode (P < or = .05) only with cycle DBP reactivity higher than treadmill for both intensities. Cycling significantly predicted SBP at 60% HRR (P < or = .001), accounting for 66% of the variance in SBP reactivity. However, in both regression models, baseline SBP was inversely related to SBP reactivity (P < or = .01). CONCLUSIONS At fixed HR values, after adjusting for baseline BP, BMI, and age, BP reactivity is mode dependent and greater for cycling than treadmill exercise at both low and moderate exercise intensity. Baseline SBP is inversely related to the magnitude of SBP reactivity after controlling for the effects of BMI and age.

Postexercise insulin action in African-American women.

UNLABELLED African Americans are more insulin resistant than Caucasians. A single bout of moderate-intensity exercise reduces insulin resistance in sedentary Caucasian individuals. The impact of a single bout of exercise on insulin resistance has never been studied in African Americans. The purpose of this experiment was to evaluate the impact of a single bout of exercise on insulin resistance ...

Endurance capacity and cardiorespiratory responses in sedentary females during different phases of menstrual cycle.

BACKGROUND Alteration in physical work capacity of females during different phases of menstrual cycle has been reported in different populations. Pertinent data is unavailable in Eastern Indian population. OBJECTIVES The present study was aimed to determine the endurance capacity and cardiorespiratory responses during different phases of menstrual cycle in young sedentary females of Eastern r...

Comparison of the effect of 8 weeks of aerobic and resistance training on lipid profile and blood pressure of inactive obese women with hypertension

Background and Objectives: Lack of physical activity is a worrying condition because it leads to major health problems such as obesity, high blood pressure and various metabolic disorders. Exercise is a lifestyle change suggested to reduce atherogenic markers in adults. Increased physical activity and fitness are clearly associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, but the optimal ...

Gender-related associations of genetic polymorphisms of α-adrenergic receptors, endothelial nitric oxide synthase and bradykinin B2 receptor with treadmill exercise test responses

BACKGROUND Treadmill exercise test responses have been associated with cardiovascular prognosis in individuals without overt heart disease. Neurohumoral and nitric oxide responses may influence cardiovascular performance during exercise testing. Therefore, we evaluated associations between functional genetic polymorphisms of α-adrenergic receptors, endothelial nitric oxide synthase, bradykinin ...

Exercise-induced increase in skeletal muscle vasodilatory responses in obese Zucker rats.

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that exercise training improves microvascular function in obese Zucker rats, a model of obesity and type II diabetes. Animals were divided into four age-matched groups: lean sedentary (LS), lean exercise (LE), obese sedentary (OS), and obese exercise (OE). The exercise groups were treadmill-exercised from 5 to 11 wk of age, including a 2-wk a...
